Camara and Doué star as Castellón extend winning streak (3-1)

Once upon a time, Yaya Touré was seen galloping across the pitch at the Etihad Stadium, with an unprecedented combination of power and technique that terrified Premier League opposition for years.

Summer signing Marc-Olivier Doué has been doing his best imitation of that over the past few games at Castalia, and it was his goal, as well as a brace from Ousmane Camara off the bench, that sealed the three points for Castellón on Monday night against Mirandés. Castellón and have now won five in a row and sit fourth in the table, with one trip to Cadiz left before the Christmas break.

While the 3-1 scoreline perhaps doesn't give enough credit to Mirandés, who were competitive throughout, it was another solid performance by the albinegros, who once again displayed many of the aspects they lacked at the beginning of the season, in particular their defensive organisation.

Yes, Doué gave away a penalty cheaply with an unnecessary lunge in, but besides that individual mistake, Mirandes's chances were limited. To give some context, in the 14 games Pablo has been in charge, Castellón have conceded more than one goal on only one occasion, the 5-4 goal fest against Real Sociedad B. And even there, three out of the four goals conceded game directly from individual mistakes, not the opponent's own making. Compare that to Plat's record, which saw Castellón concede two goals or more in three out of the first five games this season, and eight out of the nineteen games he was in charge last year.

Midfield control

Doue came into the starting XI to replace Athletic loanee Beñat Gerenabarrena, who alongside Diego Barri had formed the pairing for several games prior. The Frenchman established his presence early on, and highlighted the huge depth of talent in central midfield at Pablo Hernandez's disposal. More than depth, it's about options, the decision to go for Doue over Gere was likely in reponse to the more dynamic style of Mirandés, and it was a great call.

Whether it's Gere or Doué who partners Barri in the middle of the park, having two legitimate central midfielders, one of whom can play a more defensive role if needed, has been a massive difference maker under Pablo Hernández. The way the team want to play, Castellón absolutely need at least one tireless midfielder, if not two, and but have three in Barri, Doué, and Gere.

Camara seizes his moment

It certainly wasn't the easiest of starts for the Guinean who signed from Auxerre in August 2024. He was signed injured and only made his debut in December, before being eased into the starting striker role he was expected to occupy. While Camara's contributions last year were more to be seen in the linking and hold up play - 3 goals in 16 games - this year he has taken his finishing up a level, and finished off more of his opportunities, with five goals already in 12 appearances.

Just like they do in midfield, Castellón simply have more options in the central striker role this season. In addition to Camara, they have record signing Adam Jakobsen, and Nick Markanich, who started the game on Monday. The American has been developing well after joining from Charleston in January, and challenging for more minutes in a starting role.

With Castellón's forward three so flexible in their positions - the wingers often end up cutting inside onto their stronger foot - the goals can really come from anywhere, but having different options down the middle to hold up play and function as another playmaker as well as score has been invaluable.

E incluso allí, tres de los cuatro goles encajados fueron consecuencia directa de errores individuales, no de la propia actuación del rival. Compárese eso con el historial de Plat, que vio cómo el Castellón encajaba dos o más goles en tres de los cinco primeros partidos de esta temporada, y en ocho de los diecinueve partidos que dirigió el año pasado.

Control del mediocampo

Doue entró en el once inicial para sustituir a Benat Gerenabarrena, cedido por el Athletic, que junto con Diego Barri había formado la pareja durante varios partidos anteriores. El francés se hizo notar desde el principio y puso de manifiesto la gran profundidad de talento con la que cuenta Pablo Hernández en el mediocampo. Más que profundidad, se trata de opciones, y la decisión de apostar por Doue en lugar de Gere fue probablemente una respuesta al estilo más dinámico del Mirandes, y fue una decisión acertada.

Ya sea Gere o Doue quien acompañe a Barri en el centro del campo, contar con dos centrocampistas legítimos, uno de los cuales puede desempeñar un papel más defensivo si es necesario, ha marcado una gran diferencia bajo la dirección de Pablo Hernández. Dada la forma en que el equipo quiere jugar, el Castellón necesita absolutamente al menos un centrocampista incansable, si no dos, y cuenta con tres: Barri, Doue y Gere.

Camara aprovecha su oportunidad

Sin duda, no fue el comienzo más fácil para el guineano, que fichó procedente del Auxerre en agosto de 2024. Llegó lesionado y no debutó hasta diciembre, antes de ir ganando confianza en el puesto de delantero titular que se esperaba que ocupara. Si bien las contribuciones de Camara el año pasado se vieron más en el juego de enlace y de apoyo (3 goles en 16 partidos), este año ha mejorado su puntería y ha aprovechado más sus oportunidades, con cinco goles en 12 partidos.

Al igual que en el centro del campo, el Castellón simplemente tiene más opciones en la posición de delantero centro esta temporada. Además de Camara, cuenta con el fichaje récord Adam Jakobsen y Nick Markanich, que fue titular el lunes. El estadounidense se ha desarrollado bien tras llegar procedente del Charleston en enero y está luchando por tener más minutos como titular.

Con los tres atacantes del Castellón tan flexibles en sus posiciones —los extremos suelen recortar hacia dentro para usar su pie más fuerte—, los goles pueden llegar desde cualquier sitio, pero contar con diferentes opciones en el centro para retener el balón y actuar como otro creador de juego, además de marcar, ha sido inestimable.
