Castellón back to winning ways, Fadel signs and Oscar Gil departs

After hard fought 0-0 draw away to Granada last weekend, the albinegros returned to Castalia to face Leganés - 18th-place finishers in last year's La Liga - who have had a torrid season in the second tier. Los pepineros were among the preseason favourites to go up, but they are now entrenched in mid-table mediocrity after a poor start to the season even saw them flirt with the relegation places. And on a rainy Friday night, Castellón produced another extremely solid performance to see off the Leganés 2-0 and place themselves in the top three, ahead of rest of the weekend's matches.

It was a fantastic opening half an hour for the albinegros, as they limited Leganés to no real chances and exerted massive pressure out of possession. The relentlessness paid off, and it was Awer Mabil who volleyed home to give Castellón the lead, after Brignani headed the ball down beautifully from a free kick. The Leganés keeper was left helpless as the Australian's powerful finish found the top corner.

Ousmane Camara forced a good save from Soriano just after the half hour mark, and the Guinean was involved in the most controversial incident of the game to kick off the second half, as Castellón had a goal disallowed after a very tight offside call. Camara controlled a header from Mellot, however as the lines were drawn, the officials ruled he was offside by a fraction of a sleeve. President Bob Voulgaris, Pablo Hernández and all of the fans, me included were left perplexed.

Leganés had a fantastic opportunity to equalise on the hour mark after a crossfield ball over the defence found Juan Cruz, and although he was able to poke the ball around Matthys, it was left back Lucas Alcazar who made it back just in time to clear it off the line.

In the end, despite a couple of nervy moments in the second half, the game was sealed as Amadou Diawara pushed Calatrava in the box, and Israel Suero confidently converted the resulting penalty with five minutes left in normal time.

Pablo's message to the fans in the post-match press conference was clear - enjoy these moments, it's been a long time since something like this has happened here. Castellón have an identity, are the best in the league at recovering possession after losing it, and have a squad that Pablo has made into a real cohesive team. The Leganés game marked the first round of the return fixtures, and while the season is still far from over, Castellón are ideally positioned to make a run at promotion as early as May.

They next face relegation-troubled Real Zaragoza, in a game they will expect to win, although their opponents are coming off an impressive win over leaders Racing and face Real Sociedad B later today.

A promising defender joins, and an iconic one leaves

While Castellón's first team squad was heavily strengthened in the summer, the club is always looking for potential, and that is what they have found in Ismael Fadel. The 21-year-old joins from Yeclano, where he has made 17 appearances in the fourth tier so far this season. Capable of playing as a centre back or in defensive midfield, the Moroccan will initially play for the B team, but is someone who the club hopes will go on to feature for the first team in the not so distant future.

Meanwhile, Castellón's promotion winning captain, Oscar Gil, has departed, after a fantastic three and a half seasons with the club. One of Bob Voulgaris's first signings at the helm, the centre back was a huge presence not just on the pitch but also off it, and will now join Real Murcia to help them in their fight for promotion to La Liga 2. A regular starter until last season, the man from Navarra found getting playing time difficult of late, especially after the arrivals of Fabrizio Brignani and Agustin Sienra in the summer. We wish him all the best, and hope that he can add another promotion to his resume in the next few months!

Tras el reñido empate a cero fuera de casa contra el Granada el pasado fin de semana, los albinegros regresaron al Castalia para enfrentarse al Leganés, que terminó en el puesto 18 de la Liga el año pasado y que está teniendo una temporada muy difícil en la segunda división. Los pepineros eran uno de los favoritos para ascender antes de empezar la temporada, pero ahora están atrapados en la mediocridad de la mitad de la tabla después de un mal comienzo que incluso los llevó a coquetear con los puestos de descenso. Y en una lluviosa noche de viernes, el Castellón volvió a hacer un partido muy sólido para ganar 2-0 al Leganés y colocarse entre los tres primeros, antes de que se jugaran los demás partidos del fin de semana.

Los albinegros tuvieron una fantástica primera media hora, en la que limitaron al Leganés a no crear ocasiones de peligro y ejercieron una gran presión sin tener la posesión del balón. La insistencia dio sus frutos y fue Awer Mabil quien marcó de volea para dar la ventaja al Castellón, tras un magnífico cabezazo de Brignani a la salida de un lanzamiento de falta. El portero del Leganés no pudo hacer nada para evitar el potente remate del australiano, que se coló por la escuadra.

Ousmane Camara obligó a Soriano a realizar una buena parada justo después de la media hora de juego, y el guineano estuvo involucrado en la jugada más polémica del partido al comienzo de la segunda parte, cuando al Castellón le anularon un gol por un fuera de juego muy ajustado. Camara controló un cabezazo de Mellot, pero al trazar las líneas, los árbitros dictaminaron que estaba en fuera de juego por una fracción de manga. El mensaje de Pablo a la afición en la rueda de prensa posterior al partido fue claro: disfrutad de estos momentos, porque hacía mucho tiempo que no se vivía algo así aquí. El Castellón tiene identidad, es el mejor equipo de la liga en recuperar la posesión tras perderla y cuenta con una plantilla que Pablo ha convertido en un equipo realmente cohesionado. El partido contra el Leganés marcó la primera vuelta de los encuentros de la segunda fase, y aunque la temporada aún está lejos de terminar, el Castellón se encuentra en una posición ideal para luchar por el ascenso ya en mayo.

Su próximo rival es el Real Zaragoza, que lucha por evitar el descenso, en un partido que esperan ganar, aunque su rival viene de una impresionante victoria sobre el líder, el Racing, y se enfrenta hoy al Real Sociedad B.

Se incorpora un defensa prometedor y se marcha uno emblemático

Aunque la plantilla del primer equipo del Castellón se reforzó considerablemente durante el verano, el club siempre está buscando potencial, y eso es lo que han encontrado en Ismael Fadel. El jugador de 21 años llega procedente del Yeclano, donde ha disputado 17 partidos en Segunda RFEF en lo que va de temporada. Capaz de jugar como central o como mediocentro defensivo, el marroquí jugará inicialmente en el equipo B, pero el club espera que en un futuro no muy lejano pase a formar parte del primer equipo.

Mientras tanto, el capitan del ascenso, Óscar Gil, se ha marchado tras tres temporadas y media fantásticas con el club. El central, uno de los primeros fichajes de Bob Voulgaris al frente del equipo, fue una figura muy importante tanto dentro como fuera del campo, y ahora se unirá al Real Murcia para ayudarles en su lucha por el ascenso a la Segunda División.
