Castellón thrash Valladolid to move into first place (0-4)

The dream continues. If you told almost any Castellón fan that their team would be topping the table in February after a 0-4 away win to Valladolid, they would have checked the number of cubatas you had drunk. But no. This is very real, and after getting only two points from the first five games, it almost magical. Then again, a man known as El Mago is in charge, so maybe it shouldn't come as such a surprise.

Yesterday's game at the José Zorilla was yet another example of Pablo Hernández's tactical smarts, but also the importance of set pieces in the game of Castellón version 2026. Dutchman Rody Hoegee was brought in in the summer to improve Castellón's results in that area, and the team's improvement has been clear to see. Three of the four goals yesterday came from set pieces, helped by some poor defending from Valladolid.

The first came after a failed clearance from a corner, with Ousmane Camara left wide open in the area to place a shot past the keeper, after a smart pass from Beñat Gerenabarrena. If the finish was the highlight of the first goal, the delivery was the best part of the second, as Israel Suero floated in a beautiful free kick that found the head of Diego Barri, who leapt beautifully to put his header past Fernandes in the Valladolid goal.

While the home side were clearly shellshocked by Castellón's quick fire double, they almost halved the deficit, but Chuki was adjudged to be in an offside position after being played through. It was a nice finish over Matthys, but the goal wasn't to be, and Castellón quickly put the game beyond any doubt.

Another well delivered corner was once again poorly cleared by Valladolid, and after some brief pinball in the box, it was Diego Barri again who got the final touch to poke it in and get his second goal of the game.

Castellón continued in full control into the second half, with Diego Barri narrowly missing a hat trick after his shot from outside the area hit the bar. There was time for one more touch of genius to cap off the masterpiece, as Brian Cipenga scored what might be the goal of the season when it's all said and done.

The Congolese picked the ball up at the corner of the area, and after a glance up curled a beautiful finish into the opposite corner, over the goalkeeper. "Brian, kids are watching!", the Spanish commentator exclaimed, with Castellón playing a level of football that deserves a parental advisory.

Ahead of Racing's game later, the albingeros are top of the table, but the next few weeks will be the true test of Castellón's title credentials. They will play third-placed Deportivo, sixth-placed Las Palmas, and then Racing. Nine points against direct title rivals would almost certainly make the albingeros title favourites, but there is a long way to go before that tag is thrown about.

However El Mago is continuing to work his magic, and fans are slowly allowing themselves to believe, instead of just dream.

Si le hubieras dicho a casi cualquier aficionado del Castellón que su equipo estaría liderando en febrero tras ganar por 0-4 al Valladolid fuera de casa, te habría preguntado cuántas cubatas te habías tomado. Pero no. Esto es muy real y, tras conseguir solo dos puntos en los cinco primeros partidos, casi mágico. El partido de ayer en el José Zorilla fue otro ejemplo más de la inteligencia táctica de Pablo Hernández, pero también de la importancia de las jugadas a balón parado en el juego del Castellón versión 2026. El holandés Rody Hoegee fue fichado en verano para mejorar los resultados del Castellón en ese aspecto, y la mejora del equipo ha sido evidente. Tres de los cuatro goles de ayer llegaron a balón parado, tambien ayudados por una mala defensa del Valladolid.

El primero llegó tras un despeje erróneo desde un córner, con Ousmane Camara completamente solo en el área para batir al portero tras un inteligente pase de Beñat Gerenabarrena. Si el remate fue lo más destacado del primer gol, el pase fue lo mejor del segundo, ya que Israel Suero lanzó un precioso tiro libre que encontró la cabeza de Diego Barri, quien saltó maravillosamente para cabecear y batir a Fernandes en la portería del Valladolid.

Aunque el equipo local estaba claramente impactado por el rápido doblete del Castellón, estuvo a punto de reducir a la mitad la diferencia, pero Chuki fue declarado en fuera de juego tras recibir un pase en profundidad. Fue un bonito remate por encima de Matthys, pero el gol no subió al marcador y el Castellón sentenció rápidamente el partido.

Otro córner bien ejecutado fue nuevamente despejado mal por el Valladolid y, tras un breve rebote en el área, fue Diego Barri quien volvió a dar el toque final para marcar su segundo gol del partido.

El Castellón siguió dominando en la segunda parte, y Diego Barri estuvo a punto de marcar un hat trick, pero su disparo desde fuera del área se estrelló en el larguero. Hubo tiempo para otra genialidad que coronó la obra maestra, ya que Brian Cipenga marcó el que podría ser el gol de la temporada.

El congoleño recogió el balón en la esquina del área y, tras levantar la vista, envió un precioso disparo por encima del portero que se coló por la esquina contraria. «¡Brian, hay niños viendo el partido!», exclamó el comentarista, ya que el Castellón estaba jugando un fútbol que merecía una clasificación para adultos.

Antes del partido del Racing, los albingeros son líderes de la tabla, pero las próximas semanas serán la verdadera prueba para las credenciales de Castellón como aspirante al título. Se enfrentarán al Deportivo, tercero, al Las Palmas, sexto, y luego al Racing. Nueve puntos contra sus rivales directos por el título convertirían casi con toda seguridad a los albingeros en favoritos, pero aún queda mucho camino por recorrer antes de que se pueda hablar de ello.
