Castellón's search for control

It's been a challenging couple of weeks for Castellón. After a dreamlike winning run that propelled them to the top of the table, they were abruptly brought back down to earth two weeks ago. First by leaders Racing Santander at Castalia, 3-1, and last week by mid-table Real Sociedad B in San Sebastian, 4-2. Seven goals conceded in two games is a far cry from the defensive form the team had showed until that point, with only two goals conceded in 2026 before then. So what now?

Calm, first of all, which was the main ingredient lacking against Racing and Real B. The albingeros, in third, lead a pack of four teams separated by a point, and then Burgos, outside the playoff spots, who are a further two points away. Racing's back to back wins have seen them open up a seven point lead, so the first priority will be catching Almeria, in second, only three points away. Despite the two losses, Castellón are very much in the hunt for direct promotion, as long as they address the shortcomings of the two previous games. And in truth, both Racing, and then Real B inspired by the Racinguistas, did the same thing - press hard from minute one, leave Castellón no time, and shake them up, leading to early goals.

Ironically, it is what Castellón like to do to others, but Racing's game plan worked perfectly, and they put the game to bed in just over half an hour. Real B, without quite the same talent, but a lot of pace, did the same, with two goals in the first seven minutes. They allowed Castellón back twice, but killed the game in the second half with two further goals.

As the albinegros travel to El Molinón this weekend, Sporting will look at the last 180 minutes as a blueprint for what to do. Over to Castellón, then to rip up the plan and put the chaos to bed.

Mellot and Lucas return

Helping with that immensely will be the return of full backs Jeremy Mellot and Lucas Alcázar, to restructure the defence and restore some familiarity. Pablo Hernández was forced to move to a back three in their absence, and that in large part was what exposed the spaces at the back.

Mellot especially has been ever present at right-back, and along with Alberto Jiménez, the real leader of the albinegro defence. Without a like for like replacement, going without him was always going to be difficult.

Pablo's system has been so effective defensively, and that has arguably been built on the solidity of the back four, which is something that no Castellón manager had been able to establish previously. Getting back to a sense of normality, and having support for Fabrizio Brignani, who made a few costly mistakes in the last two encounters, will be invaluable.

A counterintuitive reality

It would be easy to look at the results, and think that Castellon's offensive numbers against Valladolid (0-4 win), Deportivo (2-0 win), and Andorra (2-0) win would be far superior to their losses against Racing and Real B. The reality is far from that however.

According to Ben Griffis's wonderful match reports app, in the Andorra game, Castellón produced 3.27 xG on only 38% possession. The PPDA (passes per defensive action) was similar for both teams, and certainly Castellón did a much better job of recovering the ball high up the pitch, but the fact that Andorra was left to control possession is striking. And you guessed it, the same thing happened in the convincing wins against Deportivo and Valladolid. Possession was essentially 50/50, with similar PPDA numbers, and similar passing numbers too.

Against Racing and Real B, Castellón dominated possession, with comfortably over 60%, and passes in the opposition half (325 to 89 in the Real Sociedad B game). However the result was the chaotic-feeling, out of control match that we witnessed.

Two things are happening. Conceding early in both cases meant Castellón had to chase the game, play higher, and that opened spaces at the back. Against Sporting then, Castellón must at all costs get through the first half an hour without conceding. The team has not dealt very well with going behind (they did come back against Real B, but not without allowing several more chances on the break).

However beyond allowing early goals, Castellón's best performances this season have actually come without a huge dominance of possession. And conversely, when Castellón have dominated possession and played high, those have been the games they lost.

Once again, in those games they often fell behind and had to chase, which would explain the elevated numbers. But it also points to the fact that Castellón allowing the opponent more possession allows them more time to set up defensively, and therefore leave fewer spaces to exploit.

How you chase the equaliser is also important. In the game against Las Palmas, the Canarians scored the opener inside half an hour, but Castellón snatched a point in injury time. While attack is not Las Palmas's strong suit, Castellón stayed disciplined, and gave up a bit more control in exchange for solidity. In the end, that paid off.

Rediscovering that patience and discipline against Sporting in the face of pressing will therefore be key, and trusting that the process will eventually yield results.

La búsqueda del control

Han sido unas semanas complicadas para el Castellón. Tras una racha de victorias de ensueño que lo aupó a lo más alto de la tabla, hace dos semanas volvió bruscamente a la realidad. Primero, a manos del líder, el Racing de Santander, en Castalia (3-1), y la semana pasada ante el Real Sociedad B, un equipo de la zona media de la tabla, en San Sebastián (4-2). Siete goles encajados en dos partidos dista mucho de la solidez defensiva que el equipo había mostrado hasta ese momento, con solo dos goles encajados en 2026 antes de eso. ¿Y ahora qué?

Tranquilidad, ante todo, que fue el principal ingrediente que faltó contra el Racing y el Real B. Los albingueros, terceros, lideran un grupo de cuatro equipos separados por un punto, y luego el Burgos, fuera de los puestos de play-off, que se encuentra a otros dos puntos. Las victorias consecutivas del Racing le han permitido abrir una ventaja de siete puntos, por lo que la primera prioridad será alcanzar al Almería, segundo, a solo tres puntos. A pesar de las dos derrotas, el Castellón sigue muy metido en la lucha por el ascenso directo, siempre y cuando corrija las deficiencias de los dos partidos anteriores. Y, a decir verdad, tanto el Racing como el Real B, animado por los Racinguistas, hicieron lo mismo: presionar con fuerza desde el primer minuto, no dar tiempo al Castellón y desestabilizarlo, lo que les llevó a marcar goles tempraneros.

Irónicamente, es justo lo que al Castellón le gusta hacerles a los demás, pero la estrategia del Racing funcionó a la perfección y sentenció el partido en poco más de media hora. El Real B, sin el mismo talento pero con mucho ritmo, hizo lo mismo, con dos goles en los primeros siete minutos. Permitió que el Castellón se metiera de nuevo en el partido en dos ocasiones, pero sentenció el encuentro en la segunda parte con otros dos goles.

Ahora que los albinegros viajan a El Molinón este fin de semana, el Sporting tomará los últimos 180 minutos como modelo a seguir. Le toca a Castellón, entonces, romper el plan y acabar con el caos.

Vuelven Mellot y Lucas

El regreso de los laterales Jeremy Mellot y Lucas Alcázar será de gran ayuda para reestructurar la defensa y recuperar cierta compenetración. Pablo Hernández se vio obligado a pasar a una defensa de tres en su ausencia, y eso fue en gran parte lo que dejó espacios en la zaga.

Mellot, en particular, ha sido un fijo en el lateral derecho y, junto con Alberto Jiménez, el auténtico líder de la defensa albinegra. Sin un sustituto a su altura, prescindir de él siempre iba a ser difícil.

El sistema de Pablo ha sido muy eficaz en defensa, y podría decirse que se ha construido sobre la solidez de la defensa de cuatro, algo que ningún entrenador del Castellón había sido capaz de establecer anteriormente. Recuperar la sensación de normalidad y contar con apoyo para Fabrizio Brignani, que cometió algunos errores costosos en los dos últimos encuentros, será de un valor incalculable.

Una realidad que desafía la intuición

Sería fácil fijarse en los resultados y pensar que las estadísticas ofensivas del Castellón contra el Valladolid (victoria por 0-4), el Deportivo (victoria por 2-0) y el Andorra (victoria por 2-0) serían muy superiores a las de sus derrotas ante el Racing y el Real B. Sin embargo, la realidad dista mucho de eso.

Según la excelente aplicación de análisis de partidos de Ben Griffis, en el partido contra el Andorra, el Castellón generó 3,27 xG con solo un 38 % de posesión. El PPDA (pases por acción defensiva) fue similar para ambos equipos y, sin duda, el Castellón hizo un trabajo mucho mejor recuperando el balón en zonas adelantadas, pero llama la atención el hecho de que se dejara al Andorra controlar la posesión. Y, como habrás adivinado, ocurrió lo mismo en las contundentes victorias contra el Deportivo y el Valladolid. La posesión fue prácticamente al 50 %, con cifras de PPDA similares y también de pases.

Contra el Racing y el Real B, el Castellón dominó la posesión, con un cómodo 60 % o más, y los pases en el campo contrario (325 frente a 89 en el partido contra la Real Sociedad B). Sin embargo, el resultado fue el partido caótico y fuera de control que presenciamos.

Están ocurriendo dos cosas. Encajar goles tempraneros en ambos casos obligó al Castellón a ir a por el partido, a jugar más adelantado, y eso dejó espacios en la zaga. Por lo tanto, contra el Sporting, el Castellón debe, a toda costa, superar la primera media hora sin encajar ningún gol. El equipo no ha sabido gestionar muy bien el ir por detrás en el marcador (aunque remontó contra el Real B, no sin conceder varias ocasiones más al contraataque).

Sin embargo, más allá de encajar goles tempraneros, las mejores actuaciones del Castellón esta temporada se han producido sin un dominio abrumador de la posesión. Y, por el contrario, cuando el Castellón ha dominado la posesión y ha jugado arriba, esos han sido los partidos que ha perdido.

Una vez más, en esos partidos a menudo se vio por detrás en el marcador y tuvo que ir a por el empate, lo que explicaría las elevadas cifras. Pero también apunta al hecho de que, al permitir que el rival tenga más posesión, al Castellón le da más tiempo para organizarse defensivamente y, por lo tanto, dejar menos espacios que explotar.

La forma de ir a por el empate también es importante. En el partido contra el Las Palmas, los canarios marcaron el primer gol en menos de media hora, pero el Castellón se llevó un punto en el tiempo de descuento. Aunque el ataque no es el punto fuerte de Las Palmas, el Castellón se mantuvo disciplinado y cedió un poco más de control a cambio de solidez. Al final, eso dio sus frutos.

Por lo tanto, será clave recuperar esa paciencia y disciplina frente al Sporting ante su presión, y confiar en que el proceso acabará dando resultados.
