CD Mirandés, the ultimate flash in the pan

It might seem a disrespectful label, but the season CD Mirandés had last campaign was nothing short of sensational. Led by highly regarded Italian manager Alessio Lisci, the team from near Burgos defied absolutely all odds to finish fourth, reach the playoff finals, and have Oviedo on the ropes with 45 minutes left to play in the second leg. Real Madrid could easily have, and may should have, been making a visit to the Estadio Municipal de Anduva this year, one of the most unlikely venues for a top level professional football match.

Instead, Santi Cazorla cancelled out Panichelli's opener in the second leg at the Tartiere, before Chaira and Portillo broke Mirandés hearts and condemned them to another season in Segunda. It will be a loss that will sting forever, and probably remain as the greatest "what if" in the history of the club from Ebro. Because as Oviedo celebrated on the pitch last June, Mirandés fans knew that there one chance at La Liga had gone.

Alessio Lisci announced his departure within days, having caught the attention of Osasuna, and the exodus of the star loanees began. Argentine Joaquin Panichelli returned to Alavés and was sold to Strasbourg, where he has racked up 9 goals in 15 games. Urko Izeta, another key contributor, returned to Athletic, where he has integrated the senior team made five La Liga appearances so far this year.

As they do almost every summer, Mirandés rebuilt their squad from scratch, with only two players remaining from the promotion run. 17 loanees make up the bulk of their team for this campaign, with Jesús Galván drafted in as manager in November after a poor start. However that's the problem for Mirandés.

Their approach means that every season is a lottery, where staying in the division is a small prize, and anything more is hitting the jackpot. This season's batch of loanees have certainly not been the latter, with the team currently 21st, only ahead of Real Zaragoza.

In truth, given the circumstances, it's not been a terrible run. They are still a team capable of grinding out close results, like the 0-0 away draw against Las Palmas last week, or the 1-0 win against Real Sociedad B the week before. And it certainly seems that Galvan has had a positive impact on the team since his appointment. The question is will that be enough to seriously turn things around, and survive another year in the division.

Making the trip to Castellón will be another tough test, against the current best form team in the league. While the idea will be to try for more than a point, Castellón will no doubt face a Mirandés team keen to put in a similar performance to their 0-0 against Las Palmas, and contain the albinegro tidal wave as much as possible. It will be the last home game before Christmas at Castalia, and despite the Monday night kick off, the fans should hopefully be out in force.

Castellón assistant manager Sergi Ripollés described Mirandés as "dangerous in transition" and "very dynamic", as well as a team who never stop running.

Será una derrota que dolerá para siempre y que probablemente seguirá siendo el mayor «qué pasaría si» en la historia del club del Ebro. Porque mientras Oviedo celebraba en el campo el pasado mes de junio, los aficionados del Mirandés sabían que se había esfumado su única oportunidad de llegar a La Liga.

Alessio Lisci anunció su marcha a los pocos días, tras llamar la atención del Osasuna, y comenzó el éxodo de las estrellas cedidas. El argentino Joaquín Panichelli regresó al Alavés y fue vendido al Estrasburgo, donde ha marcado 9 goles en 15 partidos. Urko Izeta, otro jugador clave, regresó al Athletic, donde se ha integrado en el primer equipo y ha disputado cinco partidos de Liga en lo que va de año.

Como casi todos los veranos, el Mirandés reconstruyó su plantilla desde cero, y solo quedaron dos jugadores de la temporada en la que ascendió. Diecisiete jugadores cedidos conforman la mayor parte del equipo para esta campaña, y Jesús Galván fue nombrado entrenador en noviembre tras un mal comienzo. Sin embargo, ese es el problema del Mirandés.

Su enfoque hace que cada temporada sea una lotería, en la que mantenerse en la división es un pequeño premio, y cualquier cosa más es como ganar el premio gordo. Los cedidos de esta temporada ciertamente no han sido lo segundo, ya que el equipo ocupa actualmente el puesto 21, solo por delante del Real Zaragoza.

En realidad, dadas las circunstancias, no ha sido una racha terrible. Sigue siendo un equipo capaz de sacar resultados reñidos, como el empate a 0-0 fuera de casa contra Las Palmas la semana pasada, o la victoria por 1-0 contra la Real Sociedad B la semana anterior. Y sin duda parece que Galván ha tenido un impacto positivo en el equipo desde su nombramiento. La pregunta es si eso será suficiente para dar un giro serio a la situación y sobrevivir un año más en la división.

El viaje a Castellón será otra dura prueba, contra el equipo que mejor forma tiene actualmente en la liga. Aunque la idea será intentar conseguir más de un punto, el Castellón se enfrentará sin duda a un Mirandés deseoso de repetir la actuación del 0-0 contra Las Palmas y contener en la medida de lo posible la marea albinegra. Será el último partido en casa antes de Navidad en el Castalia y, a pesar de que se juega el lunes por la noche, es de esperar que los aficionados acudan en masa.

El segundo entrenador del Castellón, Sergi Ripollés, describió al Mirandés como «peligroso en la transición» y «muy dinámico», además de un equipo que nunca deja de correr.
