The blog is back! After a much longer than planned hiatus, I'm getting back to long form CD Castellón content. While I'm no longer a regular in the press box at the top of Castalia, and currently spend less time in Castellón than I would like, the team is just getting started. The revolution is televised in La Liga 2, and I'm determined that it will also be documented on Pam Pam Football.

If you don't follow me on X, we left off here with Castellón making a decent start to life in Segunda under Dick Schreuder, and a lot of fan optimism. Just over a year later, it is Castellón and Leeds legend Pablo Hernandez leading the charge, and there is arguably an even greater sense of optimism in La Plana, with the team in the playoffs spots and coming off a phenomenal 3-1 away win to promotion contenders Deportivo La Coruña.

Between then and now, we saw the sacking of Dick Schreuder and the appointment of his assistant Johan Plat, who narrowly saved the team from relegation at the end of last campaign. He too was let go after a home draw with Ceuta in September, and replaced by El Mago. So it's been some rollercoaster. The end of last season was defined by injuries and arguably a loss of identity, and at the start of this one the latter issue seemed to persist. Plat struggled to get the albinegros playing effective football, and there was a sense in press conferences that he was a man short of solutions, and that the buy in from players was lacking.

The decision to promote Pablo from the B team was a logical one, especially after he led them to promotion to Segunda Federacion last year. In four short months, he has turned Castellón into arguably the most eye-catching team in the division alongside Deportivo and league leaders Racing, allowing the team to rediscover their goalscoring form while establishing an extremely something defensive base. The latter was not something the albinegros ever had under Plat, and even arguably with Schreuder's style, and it's proven vital in La Liga.

Even the 12 goals conceded in 13 games under Hernández don't tell the full story. Four of them came in one game, a 5-4 barnstormer of a win against Real Sociedad B, and three of them were individual mistakes by Castellón. Under Pablo's stewardship, Castellón have only conceded a handful of times because of the other team's good play.

We have also seen the summer signings come into their own. After a second half of last season where a lack of squad depth was exposed, Bob Voulgaris and co made sure that would not be an issue, with no fewer than 14 - yes, 14 - signings.

There are many names that could be highlighted, but midfielder Marc-Olivier Doué would be close to the top of my list. A physical, athletic presence in the middle of the park, he offers something Castellón have lacked in previous seasons, not to mention the shot he has on him.

And then there's the players who were there, and have finally been given the opportunity. Signed last summer as Castellón got promoted, Congolese Brian Cipenga wowed in preseason and continued that form into the competitive fixtures. He has arguably been the team's great offensive threat so far alongside last season's star Alex Calatrava, with four goals and three assists to his name.

As a team, the albinegros have racked up the fourth most goals in the division, and the third most xG per FootyStats. They have the most points in the league over the last five games, and find themselves four points off the direct promotion places. Before the Christmas break, they face bottom team Mirandés at home, and mid-table Cadiz away. It's not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that they could be at least level with Deportivo before Santa comes by, a truly impressive turnaround.

¡Cuánto tiempo sin vernos!

¡El blog ha vuelto! Tras una pausa mucho más larga de lo previsto, vuelvo con mis artículos habituales sobre el CD Castellón. Aunque ya no soy un habitual en la tribuna de prensa del estadio Castalia y actualmente paso menos tiempo en Castellón del que me gustaría, el equipo acaba de empezar. La revolución se televisa en La Liga 2, y estoy decidido a que también quede documentada en Pam Pam Football.

Si no me sigues en X, cuando lo dejamos aquí, el Castellón estaba haciendo un buen comienzo en Segunda bajo la dirección de Dick Schreuder y con mucho optimismo entre los aficionados. Poco más de un año después, es Pablo Hernández, leyenda del Castellón y del Leeds, quien lidera la carga, y podría decirse que hay un optimismo aún mayor en La Plana, con el equipo en puestos de playoff y tras una fenomenal victoria 1-3 fuera de casa ante el Deportivo de La Coruña, aspirante al ascenso.

Entre entonces y ahora, hemos visto el despido de Dick Schreuder y el nombramiento de su asistente, Johan Plat, que salvó por los pelos al equipo del descenso al final de la pasada campaña. Él también fue despedido tras un empate en casa con el Ceuta en septiembre, y sustituido por El Mago. Así que ha sido una autentica montaña rusa de emociones. El final de la temporada pasada se caracterizó por las lesiones y, posiblemente, por una pérdida de identidad, y al comienzo de esta, este último problema parecía persistir. Plat luchó por conseguir que los albinegros jugaran un fútbol eficaz, y en las ruedas de prensa se percibía que era quizas un hombre sin soluciones.

La decisión de subir a Pablo del equipo B fue lógica, sobre todo después de que el año pasado lograra el ascenso a Segunda Federación. En solo cuatro meses, ha convertido al Castellón en el equipo más llamativo de la división, junto con el Deportivo y el líder de la liga, el Racing, permitiendo al equipo recuperar su capacidad goleadora y establecer una base defensiva muy sólida. Esto último era algo que los albinegros nunca tuvieron con Plat, e incluso podría decirse que con el estilo de Schreuder, y ha resultado vital en La Liga.

Ni siquiera los 12 goles encajados en 13 partidos con Hernández cuentan toda la historia. Cuatro de ellos se produjeron en un solo partido, una emocionante victoria por 5-4 contra el Real Sociedad B, y tres de ellos fueron errores individuales del Castellón. Bajo la dirección de Pablo, el Castellón solo ha encajado unos pocos goles debido al buen juego del equipo contrario.

También hemos visto cómo los fichajes del verano han dado sus frutos. Tras una segunda mitad de la temporada pasada en la que se puso de manifiesto la falta de profundidad de la plantilla, Bob Voulgaris y compañía se aseguraron de que eso no fuera un problema, con nada menos que 14 —sí, 14— fichajes.

Hay muchos nombres que podrían destacarse, pero el centrocampista Marc-Olivier Doué estaría cerca de la cima de mi lista. Con una presencia física y atlética en el centro del campo, ofrece algo que le ha faltado al Castellón en temporadas anteriores, por no mencionar su gran disparo.

Y luego están los jugadores que estaban allí y que finalmente han tenido su oportunidad. Fichado el verano pasado cuando el Castellón ascendió, el congoleño Brian Cipenga impresionó en la pretemporada y mantuvo su buen estado de forma en los partidos oficiales. Podría decirse que ha sido la gran amenaza ofensiva del equipo hasta ahora, junto con la estrella de la temporada pasada, Alex Calatrava, con cuatro goles y tres asistencias en su haber.

Como equipo, los albinegros han acumulado el cuarto mayor número de goles de la división y el tercer mayor xG según FootyStats. Son los que más puntos han sumado en la liga en los últimos cinco partidos y se encuentran a cuatro puntos de los puestos de ascenso directo. Antes del parón navideño, se enfrentan al colista, el Mirandés, en casa, y al Cádiz, que ocupa la mitad de la tabla, a domicilio. No es del todo imposible que puedan igualar al menos al Deportivo antes de que llegue Papá Noel, lo que supondría un cambio de rumbo realmente impresionante.
